Mobile internet in Thailand

Thailand's mobile networks, True and AIS, are well developed: in cities and tourist hubs you'll find widespread 4G and increasingly 5G, and coverage on the islands is usually stable. Only in very remote mountain areas or on small islands can the signal be patchy.

With an eSIM you're online as soon as you land – no need to buy a local SIM card. Useful companions include Google Maps (which works offline), a translation app for Thai, and the Grab taxi app, which lets you get around town easily without haggling.

Highlights in Thailand

Bangkok: temples, palaces and street food

The Grand Palace, the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and Wat Arun by the river are must-sees. In the evening, the street food stalls in Chinatown and the rooftop bars with skyline views are big draws.

Chiang Mai: culture and nature in the north

The old city with its over 300 temples, the night bazaar and the surrounding mountains make Chiang Mai a favourite for culture and nature lovers. It's the starting point for trekking tours and visits to elephant sanctuaries.

Islands and beaches in the south

Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui offer stunning bays, karst cliffs and clear waters. For snorkelling and diving, head to smaller islands such as Koh Phi Phi or Koh Tao.

Ayutthaya: ruins of the ancient capital

The historic capital with its temple ruins and Buddha statues is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular day trip from Bangkok.

Practical travel tips

  • In Bangkok, the Skytrain (BTS) and underground (MRT) are the quickest and cheapest way to escape the traffic – though they get very crowded at peak times.
  • Street food is an experience: choose stalls where plenty of locals are eating and the food is cooked fresh.
  • During the Songkran festival (13–15 April), the whole country celebrates with water – be prepared to get wet and protect your phone.
  • Always carry some cash: smaller shops, markets and tuk-tuks often don't accept credit cards.

Do’s

  • Take off your shoes before entering temples and private homes – it shows respect for the culture.
  • Use the traditional wai greeting: palms together in front of your chest, especially with older people or monks.
  • Stay calm and smile even in stressful situations – losing your temper causes loss of face in Thailand.
  • Keep small notes handy so you can pay the exact amount at markets and in tuk-tuks.

Don’ts

  • Never point your feet at people, Buddha statues or sacred objects – feet are considered unclean.
  • Don't speak disrespectfully of the royal family – it's a criminal offence in Thailand and strictly enforced.
  • Don't touch anyone's head, including children's – the head is considered the most sacred part of the body.
  • Don't buy or use drugs – penalties in Thailand are very severe.

Thailand eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Thailand eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €3.99 and €35.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Thailand eSIM plans.
