Travel guide: Spain

Spain is far more than sun and beaches: Moorish palaces in Andalusia, Gaudí’s buildings in Barcelona, green mountains in the north and a tapas culture that makes you want to stay. Evenings start late, too – dinner rarely begins before 9 pm.

Mobile internet in Spain

Movistar, Vodafone and Orange provide fast 4G and increasingly 5G in cities, along the coasts and on the motorways. In remote parts of the Pyrenees or the interior, coverage can get thinner. Hotels, cafés and many city centres offer free Wi-Fi, but it is often slow.

Travellers with an EU plan can usually roam at no extra cost, but the data allowance is often limited. An eSIM is especially worthwhile if you don’t have EU roaming, stream a lot, rely on navigation or stay for longer.

Highlights in Spain

Barcelona

Sagrada Família, Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter and city beaches right on the doorstep.

Andalusia

The Alhambra in Granada, the Mezquita in Córdoba and flamenco in the lanes of Seville.

Madrid

World-class museums such as the Prado and Reina Sofía, Retiro Park and long nights in Malasaña.

The islands

Mallorca, Ibiza and the Canaries – from beach holidays to volcano hikes on Tenerife.

Practical travel tips

  • The siesta is still real in many places: small shops often close between 2 pm and 5 pm.
  • Book timed tickets online in advance for the Alhambra, the Sagrada Família and other major sights.
  • The AVE, Ouigo and Iryo high-speed trains link the big cities – booked early, often cheaper than flying.
  • July and August get very hot inland; spring and autumn are ideal for city breaks.

Do’s

  • Adopt the local rhythm: late lunch, dinner from 9 pm.
  • Try tapas at the bar and hop between several places.
  • Cover shoulders and knees when visiting churches.
  • A few words of Spanish – or Catalan in Catalonia – go a long way.

Don’ts

  • Don’t walk around town in swimwear – some places issue fines.
  • Don’t leave valuables unattended: pickpockets are active in tourist hotspots.
  • Don’t simply label Catalans or Basques as “Spanish” – regional identity matters.
  • Don’t expect breakfast to be served everywhere before 8 am.

Spain eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Spain eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €3.99 and €22.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Spain eSIM plans.
