Mobile internet in Scotland

Mobile coverage is generally good across the country, especially in cities and along major transport routes. EE, one of the largest providers, offers reliable 4G and increasingly 5G – even in many rural areas. However, in remote regions like the Highlands or Wales, signal can be patchier.

With an eSIM you're online as soon as you arrive, without having to worry about a physical SIM. Handy on the go: Google Maps for navigation, the National Rail app for train times and the London Tube map. Many cafés, pubs and hotels offer free Wi-Fi, but often with registration and slow speeds.

Highlights in Scotland

London

Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, the British Museum and Borough Market – the British capital is packed with sights and atmosphere.

Edinburgh

Scotland's capital delights with its medieval Old Town, Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat, the hill with panoramic views.

Scottish Highlands

Wild landscapes, Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Isle of Skye – a paradise for hikers and nature lovers.

Stonehenge and Bath

The prehistoric monument of Stonehenge and the Roman baths of Bath make perfect day trips from London.

Practical travel tips

  • In London and other cities you can pay for buses and trains contactlessly with a credit card or smartphone – no need to buy a separate ticket.
  • For many attractions (e.g. the Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle) it's worth buying tickets online in advance to avoid queues.
  • The weather changes quickly: always pack a rain jacket, even in summer, and plan flexible indoor alternatives.
  • If you're visiting the Highlands or other rural areas, download maps offline as signal isn't always reliable.

Do’s

  • “Please” and “thank you” are essential – the British place great value on politeness.
  • In pubs you order at the bar, not at the table (unless there's table service).
  • When entering shops or queueing, always wait patiently in line.
  • On escalators in London, stand on the right, walk on the left.

Don’ts

  • Don't push in – the queue is sacred.
  • Don't speak too loudly on public transport or make phone calls on the Tube.
  • Don't photograph people without their consent, especially children.
  • Avoid debating the royal family or sensitive political topics if you're not sure how the other person feels about them.

Scotland eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Scotland eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €3.99 and €13.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Scotland eSIM plans.
