Mobile internet in Saba

On Saba, Telcell's mobile network is reliable in populated areas and along the main roads, with 4G/LTE in the villages and many coastal stretches. In the mountains and on remote hiking trails in Saba National Park, reception can fluctuate or drop out entirely – download maps and hiking apps in advance.

With an eSIM you'll be online as soon as you land at the small airport, so you can get your bearings without hunting for a SIM card. Navigation apps for the steep roads, weather apps for mountain hikes and translation apps (in case you want to understand Dutch or local terms) all come in handy. Wi-Fi is available in many accommodations and some cafés, but it's often slow – mobile internet is the more reliable choice.

Highlights in Saba

Mount Scenery: the highest point in the Netherlands

This 877-metre volcano is the highest point in the Netherlands. A challenging hike leads through dense cloud forest to the summit – on a clear day, the view stretches all the way to the neighbouring islands.

Saba National Park

Almost the entire island is a protected area with a network of marked hiking trails. The landscape shifts between dry scrubland along the coast and lush rainforest higher up.

Saba Marine Park

The marine park around the island is one of the best diving areas in the Caribbean. Steep walls, coral formations and colourful schools of fish are often accessible right from the shore.

Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport

The runway at this small airport is considered one of the shortest in the world used for commercial flights. The approach between the mountains is an experience in itself.

Practical travel tips

  • Start hikes early in the morning – clouds often roll in during the afternoon and the summit of Mount Scenery can be shrouded in mist.
  • Only hire a car if you're experienced with steep mountain roads; otherwise taxis or guided tours are the more relaxed option.
  • For dives or snorkelling trips, take a local guide – many of the best spots are only reachable by boat and the currents can be tricky.
  • Allow plenty of buffer time when travelling via St. Maarten: the small propeller planes to Saba are weather-dependent and flights can be cancelled at short notice.

Do’s

  • Wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water when hiking – the trails are steep and there are no supply points along the way.
  • Greet locals with a friendly ‘Good morning’ or ‘Hello’ – the island is small and personal contact is appreciated.
  • When diving and snorkelling, always keep your distance from corals and marine life to avoid damaging the protected marine park.
  • Support local shops and restaurants – that way you contribute directly to sustaining the small community.

Don’ts

  • Don't stray from marked trails when hiking – the terrain is steep and the fragile vegetation can easily be damaged.
  • Don't take natural materials such as coral, shells or plants home as souvenirs – it's prohibited and harms the ecosystem.
  • Don't fly a drone without prior permission, especially near the airport – the island is small and the rules are strict.
  • Don't touch marine animals when diving or snorkelling – many species are poisonous or sensitive to contact.

Saba eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Saba eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €6.99 and €22.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Saba eSIM plans.
