Mobile internet in Madeira

Mobile coverage on Madeira is good: 4G is available almost everywhere, 5G in Funchal and larger towns. The eSIM packages use the Optimus and Vodafone networks, providing reliable coverage. In remote mountains and deep valleys the signal can be patchy – better save maps offline.

You'll find Wi-Fi in most hotels, cafés and restaurants, but it often requires a password and can be slow. For navigating with Google Maps, using hiking apps like AllTrails or sharing photos, mobile data is virtually indispensable.

Highlights in Madeira

Funchal

The capital entices with its historic old town, the colourful Mercado dos Lavradores, the cable car to Monte and the famous wicker toboggan ride.

Levada walks

The island's most beautiful trails follow centuries-old irrigation channels – such as the Levada do Caldeirão Verde or the 25 Fontes.

Cabo Girão

One of Europe's highest sea cliffs, with a glass-floored viewing platform and spectacular views over the ocean and coastline.

Porto Moniz

The natural lava pools in the north-west are perfect for swimming, while waves crash against the rocks.

Practical travel tips

  • Hire an automatic car – the roads are steep and winding, and it's the best way to reach the most beautiful viewpoints off the beaten track.
  • For levada walks, pack sturdy shoes, a rain jacket and plenty of water – mountain weather can change quickly.
  • Try local specialities such as espetada (meat skewer), bolo do caco (garlic bread) and poncha (sugarcane spirit with honey and lemon).
  • Book guided levada tours or accommodation early in high season, especially for the most popular trails.

Do’s

  • Say "Bom dia" (good morning) and "Obrigado" (thank you, if you're male) or "Obrigada" (thank you, if you're female) – politeness goes a long way.
  • On levada walks, stay on the marked paths and follow the signs to avoid getting lost.
  • Use the public buses in Funchal – they're cheap and cover the city well.
  • In popular restaurants, book a table in the evening beforehand, especially at weekends.

Don’ts

  • Don't underestimate poncha – it's strong, so enjoy it in moderation.
  • Don't swim in the levadas – they're irrigation channels and not meant for swimming.
  • Don't drive too fast on mountain roads – many bends are narrow and blind.
  • Don't leave valuables visible in your hire car when parking at tourist viewpoints.

Madeira eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Madeira eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €2.99 and €17.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Madeira eSIM plans.
