Travel guide: Japan

Japan pairs spotless megacities with quiet temples, hot springs and a food scene many people travel for alone. First-time visitors are often surprised by how smoothly everything works – as long as their phone is online.

Mobile internet in Japan

Japan’s mobile networks are among the best in the world: 4G covers practically the whole country and 5G is available in every major city – the connection even holds up in subway tunnels and on the Shinkansen. Free Wi-Fi exists at stations and convenience stores, but it usually requires registration and is time-limited.

With an eSIM you are online as soon as you land and there’s no pocket Wi-Fi router to collect. Essential apps: Google Maps for train connections including platform numbers, a translation app with camera mode for menus, and a timetable app for the Shinkansen.

Highlights in Japan

Tokyo

Neon-lit Shinjuku, the Shibuya Crossing, Meiji Shrine and countless neighbourhoods with a character all of their own.

Kyoto

More than a thousand temples and shrines, the red gates of Fushimi Inari and the Arashiyama bamboo grove.

Hakone and Mount Fuji

Onsen baths with views of the sacred mountain – an ideal stop between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Hiroshima and Miyajima

The moving Peace Memorial and the famous “floating” torii gate in the sea.

Practical travel tips

  • Cash matters less than it used to, but small restaurants, temples and vending machines often take yen only. Convenience store ATMs reliably accept foreign cards.
  • A rechargeable IC card (Suica, Pasmo or ICOCA, also available in your phone’s wallet) saves buying tickets for trains and buses.
  • Is a Japan Rail Pass worth it? Only for lots of long journeys – for Tokyo–Kyoto–Tokyo, single tickets are often cheaper.
  • Cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and autumn colours (November) are magical but busy: book accommodation early.

Do’s

  • Take off your shoes before entering homes, ryokan and some restaurants.
  • Keep one side of the escalator free (stand on the left in Tokyo, on the right in Osaka).
  • Carry your rubbish with you – public bins are rare.
  • When paying, place cash or card in the small tray at the till.

Don’ts

  • Don’t tip – it is usually returned politely.
  • Don’t make phone calls on trains, and switch your phone to silent.
  • Don’t eat while walking, and never stick chopsticks upright in rice.
  • Don’t enter an onsen or public bath with visible tattoos without asking first.

Japan eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Japan eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €3.99 and €38.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

Yes. After installation, enter the APN wbdata in the eSIM’s mobile network settings. We show you how, step by step, after your purchase.
