Mobile internet in Canary Islands

Mobile coverage in Spain is generally very good. In major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or Seville you’ll usually have 5G, and you’ll also get stable 4G in many smaller towns and along the coast. Rural areas on the islands can occasionally have signal blackspots, but for most travel needs coverage is more than sufficient.

With an eSIM for Spain you’re online as soon as you arrive, saving you the hassle of hunting for a local SIM card or paying expensive roaming charges. Free Wi-Fi is available in many cafés, hotels and public spaces, but it’s often slow or requires registration. For navigating with Google Maps, translating menus or booking tickets on the go, having your own data connection is invaluable.

Highlights in Canary Islands

Barcelona

Gaudí’s masterpieces such as the Sagrada Família and Park Güell, the lively old town and the city beach make Barcelona a must-visit.

Madrid

World-class museums, the Royal Palace and a vibrant nightlife – Spain’s capital combines culture and joie de vivre.

Andalusia

Seville, Granada and Córdoba enchant with Moorish heritage, the Alhambra, flamenco and white villages.

Tenerife and the Canary Islands

Teide National Park, black lava beaches and a mild climate all year round – the islands are a year-round destination.

Practical travel tips

  • Buy tickets for attractions such as the Alhambra or Sagrada Família online in advance – slots are often booked up weeks ahead.
  • In major cities, use the metro or buses; many cities offer cheap multi-day tourist passes.
  • Spanish meal times are different: lunch often not before 2 pm, dinner from 9 pm – plan your day accordingly.
  • Cash is still common in smaller places, even though cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Do’s

  • Greet people with a friendly “Hola” or “Buenos días” when entering a shop or restaurant.
  • Order your coffee or beer at the bar – it’s often cheaper than at a table.
  • Adapt to the local rhythm and enjoy the siesta – many shops close for a few hours at midday.
  • Try the local cuisine: tapas, paella, jamón ibérico and a glass of wine are part of the experience.

Don’ts

  • Don’t expect English to be spoken everywhere – a few words of Spanish help enormously.
  • Avoid choosing only touristy restaurants; away from the main drags you’ll often eat better and cheaper.
  • Don’t rely on tap water being drinkable everywhere – check locally or buy bottled water.
  • Don’t head out without a power bank – your phone is essential for navigation and tickets.

Canary Islands eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Canary Islands eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €2.99 and €22.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Canary Islands eSIM plans.
