Mobile internet in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's mobile networks are well developed: 4G is available almost everywhere in cities and along the coast, and 5G is being rolled out increasingly in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna. The eSIM uses the networks of Vivacom and Telenor – so you'll usually stay well connected even in more rural areas.

With an eSIM you're online straight after arrival and save yourself the search for a local provider. On the go, Google Maps helps with navigation, a translation app with camera function for Cyrillic signs and menus, and offline maps like Maps.me if you want to go hiking in the mountains.

Highlights in Bulgaria

Rila Monastery

The UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Rila Mountains impresses with its colourful frescoes and peaceful atmosphere – a must-visit.

Plovdiv

One of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities: a Roman theatre, a maze of old-town streets and a lively arts quarter.

Black Sea coast

Long sandy beaches and lively resorts like Sunny Beach or Golden Sands, but also quieter gems like Nessebar or Sozopol.

Sofia

The capital combines Orthodox churches, Roman ruins and Vitosha, its local mountain – ideal for a city break with nature.

Practical travel tips

  • The Cyrillic script can be confusing at first – a translation app with camera (e.g. Google Lens) helps with street signs and menus.
  • In Sofia, the metro is the fastest and cheapest way to get from the airport to the centre; it's modern and easy to use.
  • For trips into the Rila or Pirin mountains, pack sturdy footwear and weather protection – mountain weather can change quickly.
  • Try local specialities like banitsa (filled filo pastry), shopska salad and Bulgarian yoghurt – the food is cheap and delicious.

Do’s

  • Learn a few words of Bulgarian – blagodarya (thank you) and zdravei (hello) open doors.
  • Wear appropriate clothing in Orthodox churches: shoulders and knees covered, and men should remove their hats.
  • Always keep some cash on hand, as smaller shops, markets and taxis don't accept cards everywhere.
  • When eating, raise a glass with nazdrave and keep eye contact – that's part of Bulgarian hospitality.

Don’ts

  • Don't rely on the usual meaning of head gestures: in Bulgaria nodding means 'no' and shaking your head means 'yes'.
  • Don't expect English to be spoken everywhere – especially in rural areas, a translation app helps.
  • Don't take photos in churches or during religious ceremonies without asking – it's often forbidden or unwelcome.
  • Don't leave valuables visible in your car, especially in beach car parks – thefts do happen.

Bulgaria eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Bulgaria eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €3.99 and €22.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

Yes. After installation, enter the APN globaldata in the eSIM’s mobile network settings. We show you how, step by step, after your purchase.
