Travel guide: Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a land of rivers, lush tea gardens and the world's largest mangrove forests – and one of South Asia's least visited destinations. Those who come here experience overwhelming hospitality and authentic, vibrant everyday life. With an eSIM you stay well connected even away from the cities.

Mobile internet in Bangladesh

Mobile coverage is good in the cities, with GrameenPhone as the largest provider delivering reliable 4G in Dhaka, Chittagong and most tourist centres. In rural areas and the Sundarbans coverage can be patchy – plan offline maps and important information in advance.

With an eSIM you're online right after arrival and don't have to worry about local SIM cards with registration. Handy on the go: Google Maps for navigation (also offline), translation apps for Bengali and ride-hailing apps like Pathao or Uber for getting around cities.

Highlights in Bangladesh

Sundarbans

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is the world's largest mangrove forest and home to the elusive Bengal tiger. Boat tours through the silent waterways offer unforgettable nature experiences.

Cox's Bazar

The world's longest natural sandy beach stretches over 120 kilometres. Relaxed fishing villages, fresh seafood and the sunset over the Bay of Bengal are the highlights.

Srimangal

Bangladesh's tea capital tempts with endless tea plantations, rainforest and great biodiversity. Ideal for hiking, cycling and birdwatching.

Dhaka

The pulsating capital is loud, colourful and full of life. In the old town you'll find Lalbagh Fort, the Pink Palace Ahsan Manzil and countless markets – a boat trip on the Buriganga shows the heart of the city.

Practical travel tips

  • In cities, rickshaws and CNG auto-rickshaws are cheap – agree the price beforehand or use a ride-hailing app like Pathao or Uber.
  • Dress conservatively, especially women: cover shoulders and knees, loose-fitting clothing is pleasant and respectful.
  • Pay attention to food hygiene: eat only well-cooked food and peel fruit yourself to avoid stomach problems.
  • A few words of Bengali like ‘Dhonnobad’ (thank you) and ‘Assalamu alaikum’ as a greeting open many doors.

Do’s

  • Take off your shoes when entering mosques and religious sites.
  • Eat and greet with your right hand – the left hand is considered unclean.
  • Ask permission before photographing people, especially women.
  • Greet people in rural areas with a friendly ‘Assalamu alaikum’.

Don’ts

  • Don't point your finger at people – it's considered rude.
  • Avoid public displays of affection such as kissing or hugging.
  • Don't photograph women without explicit permission.
  • Don't put your feet on tables or chairs and don't point your soles at other people.

Bangladesh eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Bangladesh eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €3.99 and €69.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Bangladesh eSIM plans.
