Travel guide: Azores

Portugal fascinates with lively cities, stunning beaches and the wild volcanic islands of the Azores – and it's surprisingly compact. Thanks to reliable mobile coverage, you'll stay connected from a stroll through Lisbon to a hike at Sete Cidades. An eSIM gets you ready straight away, with no need to swap SIM cards.

Mobile internet in Azores

The Portuguese mobile network is well developed: in cities and along the Algarve you'll usually get 4G or 5G, on the Azores coverage is reliable along the coast and in towns, though remote valleys can have dead spots. Providers NOS, Vodafone and MEO offer stable connections for navigation, social media and video calls.

With an eSIM you're online instantly and save yourself a trip to the kiosk or hunting for Wi-Fi. Particularly handy: Google Maps for drives along the coast, translation apps for menus and hiking apps with offline maps for the Azores – so you can find your way to the next viewpoint even without a signal.

Highlights in Azores

Lisbon

Historic neighbourhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto, the famous tram line 28 and viewpoints such as Miradouro da Senhora do Monte.

Porto

The old town with Ribeira, port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and the spectacular Ponte Dom Luís I bridge.

Algarve

Golden sandy beaches, impressive rocky coastlines near Lagos and the clear water of Benagil cave.

Azores

The crater lakes of Sete Cidades, hot springs in Furnas and whale watching – a green island world in the middle of the Atlantic.

Practical travel tips

  • In Lisbon and Porto, the Viva Viagem or Andante card is worth it for buses and trains – it's cheaper than single tickets.
  • Bring some cash – small shops and markets often only accept cash.
  • On the Azores the weather changes quickly: pack a rain jacket and layers even in summer.
  • Book popular restaurants and accommodation early in high season (July/August), especially on the islands.

Do’s

  • Learn a few words of Portuguese: “Olá” (hello) and “Obrigado/Obrigada” (thank you) open doors.
  • Try local specialities like pastéis de nata, bacalhau and, on the Azores, São Jorge cheese.
  • Use public transport in the cities – it's cheap and well developed.
  • Respect nature on the Azores: stay on marked trails and take your rubbish with you.

Don’ts

  • Don't carry valuables openly in tourist areas – pickpockets are a particular risk on tram 28 in Lisbon.
  • Don't ignore beaches with a red flag – currents in the Atlantic are often stronger than they look.
  • Don't rush for the bill in restaurants – meals are served at a relaxed pace in Portugal.
  • Don't expect all shops to stay open all day – many take a lunch break.

Azores eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Azores eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €2.99 and €16.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Azores eSIM plans.
