Travel guide: Austria

Austria combines baroque cities, lively coffee house culture and alpine landscapes that invite hiking and skiing. Between Vienna, Salzburg and the Tyrolean mountains, mobile internet on the go is often just as important as the right equipment – for timetables, weather and spontaneous changes of plan.

Mobile internet in Austria

Mobile networks in Austria are well developed across the board: 4G is available almost everywhere, 5G in all larger cities and many ski areas. In deep Alpine valleys or remote mountain huts, the signal may be weaker, but along railway lines and in towns the connection is stable. Wi-Fi is available in hotels, cafés and many public buildings, though often with registration or a time limit.

With an eSIM you're online from the moment you land and can get going straight away without swapping SIM cards. Handy on the go: the ÖBB 'Scotty' app for real-time train and bus connections, Bergfex or a weather app for planning tours, Google Maps for navigation and a translation app – even though many Austrians speak English, a little German helps in everyday situations.

Highlights in Austria

Vienna

Imperial flair with Schönbrunn Palace, St Stephen's Cathedral and world-famous coffee house culture – ideal for a city break.

Salzburg

Baroque old town, Hohensalzburg Fortress and Mozart's birthplace against an Alpine backdrop.

Tyrolean Alps

Innsbruck as the gateway to the mountains, skiing in winter, hiking and mountain biking in summer.

Salzkammergut

Lake landscape with Hallstatt, Lake Wolfgang and picturesque villages – perfect for nature lovers.

Practical travel tips

  • For train travel, the ÖBB app is worth it: it shows connections including delays and platform changes.
  • In rural regions and mountain huts, cash is often the only way to pay – take enough with you.
  • For popular restaurants and coffee houses in Vienna and Salzburg, you should book ahead in the evening and at weekends.
  • In winter, accommodation in ski areas books up quickly – book early, especially for Christmas and the semester holidays.

Do’s

  • When entering shops, restaurants or huts, greet people politely – a 'Grüß Gott' or 'Guten Tag' is part of it.
  • When hiking, stay on marked paths and check the weather and trail conditions.
  • Validate bus and train tickets before travelling at the machine or on board – inspections are frequent.
  • In mountain huts and some traditional inns, take off your shoes if that's the custom (slippers are often provided).

Don’ts

  • Don't drive on Austrian motorways without a valid vignette – the fines are hefty.
  • On ski slopes, don't leave the marked and secured runs – off-piste there's a risk of avalanches and high rescue costs.
  • Don't drive into the centre of Vienna and Salzburg – parking is scarce and expensive, public transport is the better choice.
  • Avoid loud phone calls or music on public transport – Austrians value quiet.

Austria eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Austria eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €2.99 and €17.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Austria eSIM plans.
