Mobile internet in Australia

Mobile networks in Australia are very well developed in cities and along the coast. Optus, one of the major providers, offers widespread 4G and, increasingly, 5G in built-up areas. However, reception can be patchy in remote regions such as the outback or in national parks – download offline maps.

With an eSIM you're online right after landing and can navigate, book tours or share photos without interruption. Handy companions are Google Maps, a translation app and the apps of the local transport operators (e.g. Opal in Sydney, Myki in Melbourne).

Highlights in Australia

Sydney

The Opera House and Harbour Bridge are the icons – plus the beaches from Bondi to Manly and lively neighbourhoods such as The Rocks or Surry Hills.

Great Barrier Reef

The world's largest coral reef off the coast of Queensland – ideal for snorkelling and diving, best from Cairns or the Whitsundays.

Uluru

The monolithic sandstone rock in the heart of the Red Centre – an unforgettable experience, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Great Ocean Road

One of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world with the Twelve Apostles – perfect for a road trip from Melbourne.

Practical travel tips

  • Bring plenty of sun protection – UV levels in Australia are much stronger than in Europe.
  • Allow enough time for distances: Sydney–Melbourne is almost 900 km, and many routes are worth a domestic flight.
  • In cities, use contactless payment and the public transport apps (Opal in Sydney, Myki in Melbourne) – that saves you time at the ticket machines.
  • Download offline maps before driving into the outback or national parks – mobile reception is often patchy there.

Do’s

  • Always put rubbish in the bins provided or take it with you – Australians place great value on protecting the environment.
  • Only swim between the red-and-yellow flags at patrolled beaches.
  • Wear sunscreen and a hat even in everyday life – the sun is intense.
  • Keep your distance from wild animals and only observe them from afar.

Don’ts

  • Don't feed wild animals – it can harm their health and is often prohibited.
  • Don't underestimate the dangers of nature: don't swim in unfamiliar waters and heed warning signs for crocodiles or jellyfish.
  • Don't leave valuables visible in the car, especially at popular day-trip spots.
  • Don't forget to check local bushfire dangers – strict rules apply when the bushfire risk is high.

Australia eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Australia eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €3.99 and €38.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Australia eSIM plans.
