Travel guide: Armenia

Armenia is a small country with a big history – from the world's oldest Christian monasteries to dramatic mountain landscapes. Yerevan is a lively capital with Soviet charm and modern cafés. With an eSIM, you'll stay flexible on the go for navigation and translation.

Mobile internet in Armenia

Armenia's mobile networks are well developed in cities and along main roads, but there are dead spots in remote mountain regions. The three major providers VivaCell-MTS, Beeline and Ucom offer comprehensive 4G coverage in urban areas, and 5G is being rolled out in Yerevan. You'll find free Wi-Fi in many cafés, restaurants and hotels, though often only in urban areas.

With an eSIM, you'll be online right after landing and can use Google Maps for routes to monasteries and viewpoints, a translation app for Armenian or Russian, and taxi apps like Yandex Go or GG. Download offline maps before trips into the mountains, as reception can drop quickly there.

Highlights in Armenia

Khor Virap and Mount Ararat

The monastery sits right on the Turkish border and offers the most famous view of the biblical Mount Ararat – especially clear in the early morning.

Yerevan

The pink city built from tuff stone, with the Cascade complex, Republic Square, many museums and lively street cafés.

Garni and Geghard

The Hellenistic temple of Garni and the rock-hewn monastery of Geghard are both UNESCO World Heritage sites and lie close to each other.

Lake Sevan

The largest lake in the Caucasus, at 1,900 m above sea level, invites you to swim in summer and to take trips to the monasteries on its peninsula.

Practical travel tips

  • Taxi apps like Yandex Go or GG are cheap and reliable – agree on the price beforehand with street taxis or use the app to avoid haggling.
  • In Yerevan and larger cities you can pay by card, but in the countryside and for small amounts you'll need cash in drams; ATMs are available in all cities.
  • Wear appropriate clothing in churches and monasteries: shoulders and knees covered, and women often a headscarf (provided at the entrance).
  • The best time to travel is May–June and September–October; in high summer it can get very hot in Yerevan, while in winter the mountains are covered in snow.

Do’s

  • Accept invitations for coffee or food – hospitality is highly valued and refusing can seem impolite.
  • Try Armenian cuisine: lavash, khorovats (grilled meat) and dolma are a must.
  • Learn a few words of Armenian or Russian – “Barev” (hello) or “Shnorhakalutyun” (thank you) open doors.
  • Wear modest clothing and behave quietly when visiting monasteries and churches.

Don’ts

  • Don't bring up sensitive political topics such as the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict or relations with Turkey unless asked.
  • Don't photograph military installations, border areas or soldiers – this is strictly prohibited.
  • Don't throw away food when you're a guest – it's considered disrespectful to the host.
  • Don't rely on everyone speaking English – many older people only speak Armenian or Russian.

Armenia eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Armenia eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €4.99 and €93.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Armenia eSIM plans.
