Travel guide: Argentina

Argentina stretches from the subtropics to Tierra del Fuego, and delights visitors with vibrant cities, mighty waterfalls, the vast expanses of Patagonia and one of the world's best meat cuisines. Distances are huge, but the mobile network in cities is reliable – with an eSIM you stay flexible wherever you go.

Mobile internet in Argentina

Argentina's mobile network is well developed in cities and along main roads: 4G/LTE is widespread, and 5G is on the rise in major cities. Movistar, one of the big providers, is used by many eSIM services. Free Wi-Fi is available in cafés, hotels and some public squares, but is often slow or unsecured.

With an eSIM you're online right after landing and can find your bearings without buying a SIM card. Download offline maps in Google Maps in advance, use translation apps and, in cities, ride-hailing services such as Uber, Cabify or DiDi. In remote regions like Patagonia or along Ruta 40, network coverage can be patchy.

Highlights in Argentina

Buenos Aires

The capital combines Parisian flair with Latin American temperament: colourful houses in La Boca, tango in San Telmo, chic boutiques in Palermo and the best steaks in the parrillas.

Iguazú Falls

The thundering cataracts on the border with Brazil are among the most spectacular in the world – the Argentine national park offers walkways directly over the water.

Perito Moreno Glacier

In Los Glaciares National Park near El Calafate you can experience the mighty glacier up close – including thunderous ice falls.

Mendoza

At the foot of the Andes lies Argentina's most famous wine region – perfect for bodega tours, Malbec tastings and trips to Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas.

Practical travel tips

  • Allow plenty of time for distances: Argentina is huge – domestic flights save days, long-distance buses are comfortable but slow.
  • Bring enough cash, especially for smaller places – credit cards are accepted in big cities, but often not in the countryside.
  • Learn a few words of Spanish – outside tourist centres it will get you much further.
  • Keep the siesta in mind: many shops and offices close between 1 pm and 5 pm, and restaurants open late in the evening – plan your day accordingly.

Do’s

  • Greet people with a handshake or a kiss on the cheek (one kiss on the right cheek) – that's part of the warm Argentine way.
  • Taste your way through the local cuisine: asado (grilled meat), empanadas, dulce de leche and a glass of Malbec are all part of it.
  • Tip about 10% in restaurants, even if it's not on the bill – that's customary and welcome.
  • Plan breaks during the siesta and use the time for a long lunch or a rest in the park.

Don’ts

  • Don't drink tap water without thinking – it's not safe in many regions, so choose bottled water, especially outside the big cities.
  • Don't show expensive valuables openly and be especially alert in crowds, on buses and in markets.
  • Don't rely on English being understood everywhere – basic Spanish makes many things easier.
  • Don't underestimate distances and travel times – a 'quick' side trip can easily take a whole day.

Argentina eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Argentina eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €4.99 and €41.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Argentina eSIM plans.
