Travel guide: Albania

Albania is the Mediterranean's best-kept secret: white beaches, wild mountains and Ottoman towns that mass tourism hasn't caught up with yet. If you're after a mix of culture, nature and authentic Balkan flair, you're in the right place – and with an eSIM you'll stay connected wherever you go.

Mobile internet in Albania

Albania's mobile network has been significantly expanded in recent years: 4G is reliable in cities and tourist areas, and 5G is available in Tirana and other major cities. In remote mountain regions, coverage can be patchy.

With an eSIM from One Albania, you're online right after arrival without having to buy a local SIM card. Wi-Fi is available in cafés, hotels and accommodation, but on the go mobile internet is essential for navigation, translation and spontaneous bookings.

Highlights in Albania

Albanian Riviera

From Dhërmi to Ksamil: turquoise water, pebble beaches and picture-perfect coves – still without concrete jungles.

Berat

The 'city of a thousand windows' clings to a hillside and enchants with Ottoman houses and a mighty castle.

Gjirokastër

UNESCO World Heritage Site with cobbled streets, a formidable fortress and the birthplace of writer Ismail Kadare.

Albanian Alps

Theth National Park attracts with dramatic gorges, waterfalls and the famous multi-day hike to Valbona.

Practical travel tips

  • A hire car or driver is the most flexible option for coast and mountains – the roads are often winding but scenically spectacular.
  • Cash is still important in Albania, especially in small shops, at markets and in rural areas.
  • Try local specialities like byrek, tavë kosi and fresh fish on the coast.
  • For hikes in the Alps, book accommodation early as capacities are limited.

Do’s

  • Accept invitations for coffee or raki – hospitality is a big deal here.
  • Learn a few words of Albanian, for example 'faleminderit' for thank you – it opens doors.
  • Respect local dress codes, especially when visiting mosques and churches.
  • Ask the price before getting on buses or furgons to avoid surprises.

Don’ts

  • Don't take photos of military installations or police stations.
  • Don't leave litter on hiking trails or beaches – Albania's nature is too valuable.
  • Don't underestimate travel times in the mountains – a route can take twice as long as expected.
  • Avoid driving alone at night in remote areas if you don't know the roads.

Albania eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Albania eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €3.99 and €77.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Albania eSIM plans.
