Travel guide: Afghanistan

Afghanistan is a land of extremes: stark mountain ranges, ancient trade routes and legendary hospitality meet a turbulent history. Anyone travelling here should be prepared for basic conditions and plan well – a reliable internet connection makes things much easier.

Mobile internet in Afghanistan

The mobile network is operated by Roshan, among others, the country's largest provider. In Kabul, Herat and Mazar-e Sharif, 4G is usually available, while in rural regions and mountain valleys there is often only 3G or no signal at all. For a stable connection, an eSIM with the local network is worthwhile.

With an eSIM you're online as soon as you land and don't have to worry about buying a physical SIM card – particularly handy since many shops close early. As Wi-Fi in cafés and hotels is unreliable, mobile internet is the most important connection. Download offline maps and a translation app in advance in case the connection drops while you're on the move.

Highlights in Afghanistan

Band-e-Amir National Park

Six deep-blue lakes separated by natural dams in Bamyan Province – an absolute natural wonder.

Bamyan

The massive niches of the Buddha statues in the cliff and the surrounding cave monasteries bear witness to the Buddhist past on the Silk Road.

Herat

The Friday Mosque with its bright blue mosaics and the 13th-century citadel are among the most beautiful buildings in Central Asia.

Kabul

The National Museum houses finds spanning several millennia, and the Babur Gardens offer a place to breathe easy in the capital.

Practical travel tips

  • Cash is king: in Afghanistan, ATMs only work in Kabul and are unreliable; bring enough US dollars in cash and exchange them locally for afghanis.
  • Clothing: respect the local culture – women should wear a headscarf and long, loose clothing, men long trousers.
  • Transport: domestic flights between Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e Sharif and Kandahar are the safest option; overland journeys can be long and tiring.
  • Internet: download offline maps and translation apps before your trip, as the connection often drops outside the cities.

Do’s

  • Take off your shoes when entering mosques and homes.
  • Always ask permission before photographing people, especially women.
  • Accept hospitality: tea is often offered; refusing can be rude.
  • Eat and pass items with your right hand.

Don’ts

  • Don't eat or hand over money with your left hand – it is considered unclean.
  • No public displays of affection – even holding hands as a married couple is unusual in public.
  • Don't photograph military installations, government buildings or checkpoints without asking.
  • Alcohol is illegal – don't drink it in public and respect the ban.

Afghanistan eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Afghanistan eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €6.99 and €38.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

No. The access point (APN) is set automatically for all Afghanistan eSIM plans.
